A comparison of seismic design codes of Türkiye and a review of consequences of 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence by Dr. Eren Vuran

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the vulnerability of buildings constructed before and after 2000 through seismic code-based design perspective and derive conclusions for the consequences of 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence.
Study design/methodology/approach: First, a comparison is made between the last four versions of the seismic code in terms of definition of seismic effect, analysis principles of seismic design, and reinforced concrete design provisions. Then, strong ground motion records as well as structural damage patterns and failure types of severely damaged buildings exposed to the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence are discussed with emphasis on the vulnerability of RC buildings of the current building inventory.
Findings: Although significant changes have been made in the definition of seismic action, sufficient conservatism has not been achieved in the calculation of seismic loads on the structure. However, the adoption of capacity design principles and improved ductile design rules is the most important factor in reducing the seismic vulnerability of buildings constructed after 2000. Nevertheless, significant improvements are still needed in the seismic design and construction of post-2000 buildings.
Originality/value: In order to construct earthquake-resistant buildings, correct diagnosis is essential to understand the causes of building damage. In this context, the comparison of the last four versions of the seismic code with each other and with the results of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake series provides important insights.
