SEISMIC EVALUATION AND RETROFIT OF SAĞMALCILAR VIADUCT

ABSTRACT

A thesis is presented on the seismic evaluation and retrofit of a viaduct using nonlinear analysis techniques. Sagmalcllar Viaduct is located on the Trakya Motorway in Istanbul. The viaduct consists of two parallel bridges; each with a total length of 522 m and pier heights around 25 m. Seismic adequacy of the structural components is determined by in-situ investigations and a detailed analysis. Major weaknesses observed in the columns are the presence of lap-splices within column plastic hinge regions and the lack of confinement reinforcement. A suitable retrofit scheme is selected in order to overcome these deficiencies and satisfy the desired seismic performance levels.
