ABSTRACT

Many of the bridges around the world today have been designed and built before concepts of structural earthquake engineering developed; as a result, their performances are lower than desired. The Mecidiyekoy Viaduct (V302), which is located on the 1" Peripheral Freeway of Istanbul (E-5), is amongst these bridges. The Mecidiyekoy Viaduct is a lifeline bridge so the performance level of serviceability limit state should be satisfied. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of the Mecidiyekoy Viaduct, and alsoto locate possible damage locations and weak points. Following inspections to the bridge with emphasis on columns, it can be said that generally speaking, it is in good condition and can be considered consistent with the project drawings. First, a three-dimensional global finite element model is built using fiame, shell and nonlinear link elements. Second, the capacities of the column sections are calculated to compare to the demands a d to update the models. Then linear response spectrum analysis, linear time history analysis, nonlinear time history analysis and pushover analysis are all applied to threedimensional models of the viaduct. Most importantly, analyses show that the flexural capacities of the concrete hinges do not satisfy the demand of the earthquakes. Secondly, response spectrum analysis shows that the performance of the bridge is good longitudinally, where it is expected to behave linearly.
