Technological developments also have reflections in structural engineering causing significant changes. Studies that previously relied on laboratory tests or analytical methods, are supported by and can be more accurately carried out today with the help of monitoring systems installed on real structures. The greatest developments in this field are in the earthquake engineering discipline. Vibration data received from structures installed with monitoring systems, provide much practical and realistic information on the seismic behaviour of structures.
The aim is to generate early warning by detecting the visible/hidden effects to emerge in the structure in advance by monitoring it 7/24 and determining its health condition and the probable risks that could arise, depending upon various factors or ageing of the structure in time.
Behaviour patterns of the historical structures, high-rise buildings and bridges in the face of natural events such as earthqakes, storms and so forth, or related to human induced vibrations are identified through the analysis of data gathered from the real-time monitoring systems installed on the mentioned structures. It is possible to determine the performance of the monitored structure, reveal the visible/hidden impact under such dynamic effects; then inform the supervisors on the subject.
