PhD Program

For graduate students with a M.Sc. degree in Earthquake Engineering the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program consists of at least 24 credit hours course load, non-credit Graduate Seminar course and a Doctor of Philosophy Thesis. For graduate students with M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical-Electronic Engineering, Geophysics, Physics or Mathematics, additional courses may be required depending on the academic background of the student.

Course load is made up of courses provided within the program. The course work is planned under the guidance of the advisor to fit student's specific objectives and needs. The 24 credits of course work should normally comprise of 600 level courses; however, maximum two 500 level courses with credit, may be included in the program by the approval of the advisor.

The students who did not take basic compulsory or equivalent courses of the Department of Earthquake Engineering throughout their MSc. program, will have to take at least two of these basic courses, in addition to their regular Ph.D. program.

Upon completion of course work with a grade-point average of at least 3.0, the student is required to pass a qualifying examination successfully. Subsequently, the student starts dissertation work under the supervision of the appointed advisor. Following the submission of the dissertation for approval, the student defends the thesis in front of the jury. Dissertation needs to be completed within the prescribed time.
